New Fly Fishing Movie: Rivers of a Lost Coast

I came across this interesting new fly fishing movie at Maine Fly Fish forums. The movie is called Rivers of a Lost Coast and a trailer can be found here. Unfortunately, there are no screenings in PA so I’ll have to catch it on DVD later.

Second Valley Creek Fish Kill

Another fish kill at Valley Creek was observed over the past few days according to Paflyfish.com http://www.paflyfish.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=9029&forum=6. This is the second one in recently months and is especially troublesome because it’s one of the few creeks that hold wild browns in the area.

Danville 3/0 Monocord Waxed Discontinued

Yet, another rainy day so no fishing again this weekend with the floods. That gave me time to order some Danville thread for one of the fly tying club members that does not have a computer. Danville 3/0 Monocord Waxed thread in my opinion is the best thread for fly tyers, it’s strong and easy to work with. Unfortunately, they are no longer making this thread, so what is out there is all that will be made. I’ve been stocking up myself.

Finally brought a Dyna-King Trekker Vise

After months of research, I decided to pull the trigger on upgrading to a new vise. I opted for the Dyna-King Trekker model over the similar Renzetti. Both vises are the leaders in their price range. The main selling point for me was the Dyna-king felt better made and more sturdy than the Renzetti. Both looks like that would do the job for both Trout and Bass flies. My Apex vise got me started, but I’m looking forward to the next level with Dyna-king.

I purchased my vise from Eldredge Bros Fly Shop in Maine. I highly recommend visiting their shop if you are in Maine.

French Creek Fly Tying Club

I received a call from Jack Mickievicz at French Creek Outfitters saying that the French Creek Fly Tyers Club was starting on 2/12. If anyone leaves in the general area of Phoenixville, I highly recommend that you come and join the club. Like many others in the area, I learned to tie flies from Jack. He’s an exceptional fly fisherman and fly tier with many years of experience. More information can be found at the French Creek Outfitters.

Maine Freeze Up

Kevin McKay is a guide that I use when I’m up fishing in Maine. I’ve known him for a few years and his teachings have really made an impact on why I consistently go fly fishing in Pennsylvania. Anyways, he throws a yearly gathering called Freeze Up and it was mentioned in the Bangor News recently. I highly recommend that you check out his web site Maineflyfish.com. Fly Fishing Show 2009

With the winter comes slow fishing and much downtime due to limited daylight hours. What’s a fly fisherman to do besides the normal catching up with tying flies and reading books? I think this year I’ll take a ride up to the Fly Fishing Show 2009 in New Jersey.
