Fly Fishing Report: French Creek

Was able to spend a few hours this evening at both the Fly Fishing only and the non-FFO sections of French Creek. Good hatch going on but not much top water action. Got one on a BWO nymph and one on hares nymph. Lost about 6 and got 2 lareg chubs as well.

Decided to brave the opening day crowds near the end of the day. I started with the FFO only section where it wasn’t too crowded. Worked my way down to the non-FFO only to see a ton of people. Managed to lose a couple of trout on BWO nymphs. There was an excellent stonefly hatch going on as well as some BWO coming off the waters. Not much top water action.

Fly Pattern: Blue-Winged Olive (BWO) Nymph

Description

This fly has been doing well for me during March. Tie these small during early spring and make them larger as time goes along.

Materials

Hook	Nymph Hook Size 14-20
Thread	6/0 – Olive or Green
Tail	Clear or Olive Micro-Fibers
Rib	Copper
Body	Olive or Green Thread
Wingcase	Flash
Thorax	Clear or Olive Micro-Fibers
Legs	Olive Dubbing
Head	Black Bead

Instructions

Step 1: Please bead on the hook and move to the eye of the hook. Tie in some olive or green thread. Tie in some micro-fibers for the tail. Leave the fibers in to be used later as legs.
Step 2: Tie in copper wire and wrap around about 3 or 4 times for the ribs
Step 3: Tie a piece of flash where the ribs end. Tie in some olive dubbing for the thorax.
Step 4: Tie off the flash right below the bead head. Split the micro-fibers and tie off to create legs. Whip finish and put some cement on.

Spent a few hours on French Creek. Cold and windy outside and the water was cold. Not much bug or fish action today. Managed to get 1 nice Brown Trout on a Blue-Winged Olive (BWO) nymph.

Fished for about an hour before dark. Managed to get 2 brown trout, both on Blue-Winged Olive (BWO) nymphs.

Spent a few hours on French Creek. Managed to get 2 Brown and 2 Rainbow trout, lost several others. All fish were caught on Blue-Winged Olive (BWO) nymphs. Saw lots of small BWO flying around but no fish were rising.

Decided to hit French Creek a few days after the floods. Water was cold, high and moving fast. I lost a huge Rainbow trout when he decided to come up for air. Used mostly Blue-Winged Olive (BWO) nymphs.

Spent a couple of hours at the Fly Fishing Only section of French Creek today. I started at the where bridge is out and wading downstream. Water was extremely cold due to the continuing snow run offs. No top water action at all. I managed to get 3 rainbow trout using egg and woolly bugger patterns. One was a real nice 15 inch trout.

Fly Fishing Report: Pickering Creek and French Creek

With the weather finally changing down here, I decided to take the day off. I started my day off at Pickering Creek. Got absolutely nothing :angry: but saw lots of rising fish. Took a lunch break and went out to lunch with my wife. I then headed off to French Creek. I was able to get one brown trout and one rainbow. Got them on Stonefly nymph and a green woolly bugger. Got a few big creek chub which got me excited thinking I got some big trout. Water was very high and cold due to the couple of feet of snow that melted this past week. Spring finally around the corner! Nice to get out and try to get my wading legs back.
