Fly Fishing Report: French Creek

Was able to spend a few hours this evening at both the Fly Fishing only and the non-FFO sections of French Creek. Good hatch going on but not much top water action. Got one on a BWO nymph and one on hares nymph. Lost about 6 and got 2 lareg chubs as well.

Spent a few hours on French Creek. Cold and windy outside and the water was cold. Not much bug or fish action today. Managed to get 1 nice Brown Trout on a Blue-Winged Olive (BWO) nymph.

Fished for about an hour before dark. Managed to get 2 brown trout, both on Blue-Winged Olive (BWO) nymphs.

Spent a few hours on French Creek. Managed to get 2 Brown and 2 Rainbow trout, lost several others. All fish were caught on Blue-Winged Olive (BWO) nymphs. Saw lots of small BWO flying around but no fish were rising.

With the weather finally changing down here, I decided to take the day off. I started my day off at Pickering Creek. Got absolutely nothing :angry: but saw lots of rising fish. Took a lunch break and went out to lunch with my wife. I then headed off to French Creek. I was able to get one brown trout and one rainbow. Got them on Stonefly nymph and a green woolly bugger. Got a few big creek chub which got me excited thinking I got some big trout. Water was very high and cold due to the couple of feet of snow that melted this past week. Spring finally around the corner! Nice to get out and try to get my wading legs back.

Fly Fishing Report: Salmon River and Oswego River

A friend from Maine invited me to fly fish the Salmon River. My friend is a master Maine fishing guide, so I highly recommend hiring him if you are in Maine, Maine Fishing Adventures. There were various people joining the group throughout the 4 days of fishing. It was fun both on and off the water.

Fishing that river has been something that I wanted to try out for awhile now. I had to buy a new Scott Fly Rod (10ft) and Ross Reel to target the larger and more powerful steelhead. We started the trip off mid-day on Wednesday on the Upper Fly Section. I lost a steelie within the first 15 minutes only to see him splash away. I did manage to get a nice brown later in the day but no steelies.

The next day was more difficult. We explored various sections of the river. My friend had a productive day with many steelies on but none taken in. With these fish being fresh out of the lake, it’s difficult to bring them in on smaller tippet lines. I saw a few steelies brought in by spinners using heavier lines. Later at night the group had more success with bringing in nice browns, with one group member bringing in a large 25 inch brown.

Day 3 proved to be the most productive day. We started off in the Owsego River to get big browns. We all got fish but no steelies. After the warnings for rising waters we headed back to the Salmon River. I think I had nightmares that night from the sirens and lady on the loud speaker. Finally, I managed to get my first steelhead! Later I fought a really big brown for about 4 minutes before he won and snapped the line.

Day 4 was a half day of fishing and a long drive to PA. Managed a good size brown and lost a few steelies that morning. Great few days of fishing with some real hardcore fishermen.

Lesson learned during the trip, let them run when they want to so that you don’t break the line and let the drag do the work. Colors that worked this time were orange estaz eggs and small yellow and orange dot eggs.

Fly Fishing Report: Valley Creek

After SMB fishing was unsuccessful on Saturday, I decided to give Valley Creek a shot. I fished from the bridge up past the PA Turnpike. Saw lots of trout and managed to get one brown trout on a green weenie.

Went to French Creek down past the red covered bridge. Saw a monster brown trout swimming the middle of the creek. Managed to get 2 brown trout while on the big boulders. One was caught with a trailing copper john behind a rock and the other with a BWO.

The I went to the fly fishing only section for about 20 minutes near the iron bridge. Very windy, but I did manage to get a brown trout on a BWO.

Fly Fishing Report: Little Schuylkill River and Tulpehocken Creek

I took a day off from work and decided to go north and west for the day in search of deeper and faster water. It was nice to get my wading legs back but I need a few more trips to get back into shape. For the day I did manage to get 2 brown trout and 3 raindbows and loss equal numbers

Went to the French Creek fly fishing only section for a couple of hours down by the red covered bridge. Managed to get 1 nice Brown Trout on a BWO.
